Death of a Domestic Worker in North Lebanon

I received information today on the death of a migrant domestic worker in Abi Samra, Tripoli, North Lebanon, in the El Outour neighborhood. She either fell or threw herself from the 10th floor. The case is yet to be reported by the media.

مداخلته هي جزء من الجلسة التي نظمتها حركة مناهضة العنصرية مع وزير العمل السابق شربل نحاس يوم الاثنين 11 شباط 2013 في مقهى نسوية في بيروت-لبنان. وقد حاضر شربل نحاس في نظام الكفالة في لبنان. هذا النظام الذي يحكم العلاقة بين أصحاب العمل وعاملات المنزل الأجنبيات يستضعف العاملات الأجنبيات ويعرّضهن للاساءة والاستغلال ومن ثمّ يقيّدهن في هذه الحالات التعسفية.

الاستاذ شربل نحّاس ناقش عدم وجود ما يسمى بنظام الكفالة وطرح اعتماد طريقة بديلة لمعالجة الإطار القانوني الذي يحكم العمّال الأجانب في لبنان. نظام الكفالة هو احد عناصر القمع والظلم الرئيسية الذي يواجهه العمّال الأجانب في لبنان. وهو يلزمهم بصاحب عمل واحد، ينفي حقّهم بحرية التنقل والعمل ويمنح الحرية لأرباب العمل معاملة العمّال الأجانب كما يشاؤون وبلا قيود

This video is a part of an information session organized by the Anti-Racism Movement (ARM) on Monday 11th of February 2013 at the Nasawiya Café (beirut-Lebanon) with former Minister of Labor Dr. Charbel Nahas, who spoke about the sponsorship system. This system, which governs the relationship between employers and migrant domestic workers (MDWs), renders MDWs vulnerable to abuse and exploitation and then traps workers in these abusive situations.

Dr. Nahas argues that there is no such thing as the sponsorship system and proposes an alternative for addressing the legal framework governing MDWs' lives in Lebanon.

The sponsorship system is one of the main elements of oppression and injustice that MDWs face in Lebanon. It binds them to one employer, denies their right freedom of movement and employment, and grants employers the freedom to treat their employees as they please.

BEIRUT: A Nepalese domestic worker died in hospital Tuesday evening after suffering a stab wound to the stomach that was apparently self-inflicted, security sources told The Daily Star.

The sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that 28-year-old Sina Bell died shortly after admission to St. George Hospital in Ajaltoun, Kersouan at around 7 p.m.

خادمة طعنت مخدومتها قبل ان تنتحر

احضرت  الى مستشفى السان جورج في عجلتون الخادمة النيبالية سينا بال - مواليد 1975، وهي مصابة بطعنة سكين في بطنها وما لبثت ان فارقت الحياة، فيما نقلت مخدومتها اللبنانية منى الشمالي - مواليد 1940، مصابة بدورها بطعنة سكين لكن في يدها، وهي موضع عناية طبية.

ومن التحقيقات التي اجريت مع الشمالي تبين ان النيبالية كانت في حال غضب شديد فسددت الى مخدومتها طعنة وعادت لتطعن نفسها بالسكين في بطنها وتبين ان البصمات المتروكة على المدية تطابقت مع بصمات الخادمة.

“Shouting without a listener” is a play written, directed and produced by Rahel Zegeye. It paints the struggles of Lily, a migrant worker, against Lebanese society’s discrimination and the inefficiency of her embassy.

يبدو ان ظاهرة تعنيف العاملات الأجنبيات في المنازل باتت متأصلة في نفوس بعض اللبنانيين، حيث رصدت كاميرا "النشرة" في منطقة سهيلة امرأة تعنّف خادمتها وتصرخ عليها بصوت عالٍ ثم قامت بدفعها بعيداً عن اعين الناس. "النشرة" تضع الصور بتصرف المسؤولين عسى ان تكون حافزا لدفعهم لمحاربة هذه الظاهرة التي تضرب المجتمع اللبناني.

Ethiopian domestic worker jumps from 11th floor in Zalka

An Ethiopian domestic worker jumped from her employer's balcony in the Zalka district of Metn in an apparent suicide, security sources told The Daily Star Monday.Twenty-five-year-old Janis Ra Joseph jumped off the 11th floor and died immediately. Her body was transferred to a nearby hospital. Police launched an investigation into the incident.

 وطنية - افاد المندوب الامني للوكالة الوطنية للاعلام الياس شاهين انه في الزلقا محلة عمارة شلهوب اقدمت الخادمة الاثيوبية - جانيش سريانت راجوزف - من مواليد 1987، على رمي نفسها من منزل مخدومها الكائن في الطابق الحادي عشر (11) ما ادى الى مصرعها على الفور بعد تحطم كامل اقسام جسمها وقد نقلت جثتها الى براد مستشفى ابو جودة والتحقيقات جارية لمعرفة الملابسات.

السياحة تضبط مخالفة تمييز ضد مواطنة أثيوبية وتحيل مدير مسبح الى المحاكمة

17 تشرين الأول 2012 - المفكرة القانونية - الحادثة هي الأولى من نوعها. شرطة وزارة السياحة تضبط مخالفة "تمييز" ضد مواطنة أثيوبية منعت من الدخول الى مسبح كائن في بيروت، تنظم محضرا بها وترسله الى القاضي المنفرد الجزائي في بيروت. وكانت وزارة السياحة أصدرت بتاريخ سابق (45 نيسان 2012) تعميما تنظيميا يفرض على مجمل المؤسسات السياحية احترام المساواة في استقبال الزبائن. القاضي عين جلسة أولى للنظر فيها في 12-10-2012 وتم ارجاؤها لابلاغ "المخالف" الى 11-1-2013. المفكرة تترقب هذا الموعد. 

تلفزيون الجديد: أنا واللبناني على عاملة المنزل الأجنبية، وأنا وعاملة المنزل الأجنبية على العامل الأجنبي

في تقريره السيئ والمغلوط والذي زيّف وقائع حادثة الإعتداء على العمال الأجانب، قام تلفزيون الجديد باستعمال شهادات لعاملات منزل أجنبيات، إضافة لشهادات اللبنانيين، لاتهام العمال الأجانب من مصريين وسوريين وغيرهم بالقيام باعتداءات على النساء والبنات.

تطبيقا لمبدأ "أنا وأخي على ابن عمي, وأنا وابن عمي على الغريب"، عندما يعتدي اللبناني على عاملة المنزل الأجنبية، يكون اللبناني مظلوما ومتهم زورا. أما عندما يكون الأجنبي متهم، فهو مدان. وعندها تصلح شهادة عاملات المنزل الأجنبيات لإثبات التهمة.
