Suicide of Bengali Maid last Thursday in Hart Hreik

Al-Akhbar newspaper reported today the death, last Thursday night, of Bengali maid, Kana Aktar, after falling from the 5th floor balcony of her employer's house (Najwa S.) in Hart Hreik (Beirut Southern Suburb). Al-Akhbar noted that "the Internal Security Forces (ISF) report concluded within minutes that the maid committed suicide".

توفيت العاملة البنغلادشية كانا أكتر مساء الخميس الماضي، وذلك بعد سقوطها من شرفة منزل مشغّلتها نجوى س. في الطبقة الخامسة من مبنى في حارة حريك. اللافت أن البلاغ الوارد إلى قوى الأمن بعد دقائق على الوفاة يجزم بأن العاملة أقدمت على «الانتحار».

Ethiopian 15 meter fall, presumed suicide

The National News Agency reported today the suicide of Ethiopian maid Tana Amny Bou Aziz who jumped from the balcony of her employer's home in Shiah, a Beirut Southern suburb. The coroner who examined the body confirmed that the death was due to the full shattering of the scull and of the body of the maid as a result of the 15 meter fall.

Danish Refugee Council and partner organisation KAFA (enough) Violence & Exploitation are working hard to raise awareness on the poor living and working conditions of the estimated 200,000 migrant domestic workers and to support those of them who are victims of abuse in Lebanon.

توفيت العاملة الفيليبينية أنطونيتا أكينو (51 عاماً) قبل ظهر السبت الماضي بعدما صدمتها سيارة فان في ذوق مصبح، وقد أُصيبت برضوض وجروح، ثم نُقلت في حالة اللاوعي إلى المستشفى لكنها فارقت الحياة بعد نحو ساعتين.

An Attempted Suicide by a Nepalese Maid?

Al-Akhbar newspaper reported today that a Nepalese domestic worker, Naza T., was transferred to hospital after stabbed in the stomach with a knife. The incident took place in the home of her employer, Hana S. in Zqaq El Blat in Beirut. The security forces report said that Naza tried to commit suicide. No date or additional was given in the news piece.

125$ yes just 125$ for working 18 hours a day or even more. To make the story more frustrating, Nana used to work in Nepal, and also get 125$. So coming to Lebanon and working more than 18 hours was the worst thing she ever did.

How dirty is your laundry? Maybe I should ask your maid and quite possibly she will air out information dirtier than your clothes. Yes, I am referring to the treatment these workers are subjected to that reminds me of history class in the United States when I used to read about slavery.

Lebanon has justified modern-day slavery with contracts and cultural prejudice. Security forces prevent the suicide of a migrant workers

Yesterday, news websites reported that the Lebanese security forces intervened and prevented a migrant domestic worker in Jdeideh from throwing herself from the fourth floor apartment of her employer. She was then taken to hospital after a nervous breakdown.

حاولت العاملة الأجنبية ـــــ مجهولة الاسم ـــــ في منطقة الجديدة رمي نفسها من الطابقة الرابعة، من شقة المنزل الذي تعمل فيه. لكن قوى الأمن سارعت ومنعتها من ذلك، وقد نُقلت إلى أحد المستشفيات القريبة بعد إصابتها بانهيار عصبي.

Minister of Labor to Human Rights Watch: Your report harms Lebanon's image and reputation

In an answer typical of the inferiority complex of many Lebanese towards the "West", the minister of Labor replied to the report on Access to Justice for migrant domestic workers by claiming that it harms the image of Lebanon and disfigures it. The minister added that the Ministry of Labor is committed to protecting the rights of migrant workers in Lebanon.

In Al-Akhbar's coverage of this issue, we also read that the minister declared that 114,000 migrant domestic workers work legally in Lebanon, and 86,000 are without legal residency.

Rights activists replied to the minister saying "the report is on the judiciary and access to justice for migrant domestic workers, not about your ministry." And they asked whether the minister wants to put a cover on the issue of mistreatment of migrant domestic workers in Lebanon.

Already, the presence of the representative of the minister of labor at the conference launching the report two weeks ago was useless. He went to great length to defend the ministry's work as if they were in the accusation box, instead of exploring ways to strengthen the legal and judicial protection of migrant domestic workers.

رد وزير العمل بطرس حرب في كتاب أمس على تقرير «هيومن رايتس واتش» الذي حمل عنوان «إخفاق القضاء اللبناني في حماية عاملات المنازل الوافدات»، ورأى أنه تضمن مغالطات ومبالغات تسيء إلى صورة لبنان وتشوّهها. جاء في رد الوزير حرب «لا أنفي حصول بعض التجاوزات، يهمني أن أؤكد لكم متابعة وزارة العمل لهذه التجاوزات، واهتمامي الشخصي بها. إلا أنني آسف لبعض المبالغات الواردة في التقرير، ناهيك بنقص في الإضاءة على ما تقوم به وزارة العمل في هذا الإطار بالتنسيق مع هيئات المجتمع المدني الوطنية والدولية، ومؤسسات الدولة المعنية، إلى نقابة أصحاب مكاتب الاستقدام، وسفارات وقنصليات الدول ذات الرعايا العاملين في لبنان».
أكد حرب «أن حكومة لبنان ملتزمة احترام حقوق كل مواطنيها، والرعايا الوافدين إليها... وهي تسعى إلى تصويب الثغر التشريعية والإدارية والقضائية، بما يؤمن أفضل حماية لهؤلاء. هذا بالإضافة إلى متابعتها الدقيقة، ومن خلال مفتشيها، لقضايا هؤلاء فور ورود أي شكوى منهم، أو من السفارات والقنصليات التي يتبعون لها، أو من هيئات المجتمع المدني التي باتت وزارة العمل على تواصل وتنسيق معها». لفت حرب إلى أنه أطلق «ورشة خاصة لإعداد قانون خاص للعاملات في الخدمة المنزلية»، وقال إنه اكتشف أن عدد المرخص لهن قانونياً 114,000، فيما يقدر عدد العاملات منهن على نحو غير شرعي 86,000. وشدد الوزير على أنه بصدد إعادة النظر في شروط منح تراخيص مكاتب الاستقدام.

ردّ الحقوقيين

استغرب ناشطون متابعون لقضايا العاملات الأجنبيات ما ورد في بيان حرب. توقفوا بداية عند قوله إن التقرير تضمن «نقصاً في الإضاءة على ما تقوم به وزارة العمل في هذا الإطار»، مذكّرين بأن التقرير كان مخصصاً لدراسة كيفية تعاطي القضاء مع قضايا عاملات المنازل الأجنبيات وشكاواهن، والقضايا المرفوعة على بعضهن، ولم يكن تقريراً عن تعاطي وزارة العمل مع العاملات الأجنبيات. وتساءل الناشطون عمّا قصده الوزير بالقول إن التقرير تضمن مغالطات ومبالغات، فردّه لم يتضمن تحديداً علمياً لهذه المغالطات والمبالغات. وأضاف المعترضون على رد الوزير، أن تقرير «هيومن رايتس ووتش» يهدف إلى تسليط الضوء على مشكلة في محاولة لدفع المعنيين إلى اتخاذ إجراءات بحق مرتكبي الجنايات والمخالفات، لا إلى التعتيم على المشكلة لحماية تصرفات سيئة. المحامي رولان طوق، المشارك في إعداد تقرير «هيومن رايتس ووتش» قال إنه «كلما جرى الحديث عن مشكلة العاملات الأجنبيات، يُردّ عليه بعبارة إنكم تسيئون إلى صورة لبنان. فهل المطلوب ألا نتكلم في هذه القضية؟». وذكّر بأن التقرير استند إلى قضايا وشكاوى دُرست في المحاكم اللبنانية، وأنه تضمن دراسة علمية وقانونية للأحكام الصادرة، وتوصل إلى أن العاملات يفتقرن إلى الحماية، مشدداً على أن معدي التقرير ليسوا مع طرف ضد آخر، بل يطالبون بقانون يعاقب المجرم، أكان رب العمل اللبناني أو الخادمة إن قامت بمخالفة أو جناية، مضيفاً أن التقرير لم يدّعِ أن جميع أرباب العمل سيئون. ولفت طوق إلى أن الوزير حرب نفسه يعترف بوجود تجاوزات، مضيفاً أن الوزارة تعمل على محاربتها، وهذا ما يؤكد وجود المشكلة التي أعاد التقرير الإضاءة عليها.

قتيلة اثيوبية صدما على اوتوستراد الصفرا

An Ethiopian female, Mamaya Lili, died after being hit by a car on Safra highway, in Byblos, today. The driver was arrested.

نقلا عن الوكالة وطنية – 27/9/2010 - افاد مندوب "الوكالة الوطنية للاعلام" في جبيل، ميشال كرم، ان سيارة بيجو رقمها 463454/ج بقيادة (أ.ز.د) صدمت على المسلك الشرقي من اوتوستراد الصفرا، الاثيوبية مامايا ليلي، والتي توفيت على الفور، ونقلت جثتها الى مستشفى سيدة مارتين في جبيل، فيما تم توقيف السائق.

Sri Lankan janitor dies electrocuted

A Sri Lankan janitor died in Naccache apparently electrocuted by accident in a shower. He was aged 54.

وفاة عامل بصعقة كهربائيّة
عُثر على جثّة رجل في حمام داخل إحدى البنايات في منطقة النقاش. ومع بدء التحقيقات، وبنتيجة المتابعة تبيّن أنّ الجثّة تعود إلى دنيكا كالا (54 عاماً)، من التابعية السريلنكية، يعمل ناطوراً في البناية، أمّا سبب الوفاة فيعود إلى صعقة كهربائية.

Ethiopian domestic worker shot dead in Zogharta

Today, Al-Akhbar newspaper reported the death, last Monday (20 September) of an Ethiopian worker in Lebanon, who was shot dead in the face with a rifle, in Zogharta. Her employer, Saad 'A., was arrested and claimed that he had asked her to carry his hunting rifle into the house after a round of shooting for fun outside the house. And while carrying the rifle, a shot was accidentally fired which killed the Ethiopian domestic worker.

Al-Akhbar quoted policy reports that the employer will be charged with criminal neglect, not more. The name of the Ethiopian domestic worker was not put in the report.

من أطلق الرصاص على عاملة إثيوبيّة؟

نُقلت عاملة إثيوبية إلى مستشفى في زغرتا وهي جثّة هامدة، إثر إصابتها بطلق ناري في خدها الأيمن، وهي تعمل لدى سعد ع. في بلدة مرياطة قرب زغرتا.

الحادث وقع يوم الاثنين الماضي، وقد تولّى مخفر زغرتا التحقيق فيه، وأُوقف صاحب المنزل وسيُحال على النيابة العامة. أمّا أسباب الحادث، فرواها لـ«الأخبار» مسؤول أمني، وقد رفض الكشف عن اسم العاملة، قال إنها قد تكون في العقد الثالث، وأضاف «طلب سعد من الفتاة أن تنقل بارودة الصيد الخاصة به إلى المنزل بعدما كان يلهو بها خارجاً، وأثناء نقلها البارودة انطلق عيار ناري منها بطريق الخطأ وأصابها في خدّها الأيمن فتوفّيت على الفور». أكد المسؤول الأمني أنّ صاحب المنزل «سيحال على النيابة العامة للمحاكمة نظراً إلى إهماله»، لكن المسؤول نفى وجود «نيّة جرمية أو رغبة في قتل الفتاة».

رغم تأكيد المسؤول المتابع لملف حادث وفاة العاملة الإثيوبية عدم «وجود العامل الجرمي»، فإنّ الحوادث الجرمية الأخيرة التي يتعرّض لها عدد كبير من العاملات الأجنبيات في لبنان تستدعي طرح التساؤلات عن الأسباب الحقيقيّة للوفاة.
