As part of the project: “Stop the Exploitation of Migrant Domestic Workers”, in partnership with the Danish Refugee Council and KVINFO, KAFA (enough) Violence and Exploitation, launched a study entitled “Servant, Daughter or Employee? A Pilot Study on the Attitudes of Lebanese Employers towards Migrant Domestic Workers”  under the patronage of His Excellency Minister of Labor Sheikh Boutros Harb. The Researcher, Dr. Sawsan Abdulrahim presented the findings of the study which unveiled some of the attitudes and practices of Lebanese employers towards migrant domestic workers thought to be normative but which also constitute violations of their human and labor rights. The study did not focus on the severe forms of physical exploitation and violence that many domestic workers suffer, but on other practices and perceptions that enforce employers’

Ethiopian "suicide" from 8th floor, in M'saitbeh, Beirut

Yesterday, the National News Agency reported that an Ethiopian migrant worker "committed suicide by throwing herself from the 8th floor". Her body and scull were smashed as a result of the more than 30 meter fall.
Assafir newspaper (see below for full text) reported the news today as is. While Al-AKhbar newspaper (see below for full text) wrote that no one has the right to state that it was a suicide before the end of the investigation, and that there is always the probability of a homicide. Al-Akhbar attempted to investigate the case but the house owner M. F. was unreachable, and the M'saitbeh police station did not confirm or deny the case, according to Al-Akhbar.

Egyptian Chronicles: What If She Were An African Supermodel !!??

I am following with huge admiration the current campaign in Lebanon against racism especially racism against domestic workers whether from Africa or Asia. It is not a new campaign but now it is getting more powerful and is heard more.

Domestic workers in Lebanon can't go with their employers' families to private beaches, this is a fact I was surprised to know because (continue reading here)

Source: http://www.colombopage.com/archive_10B/Jul24_1279946058KA.php

July 24, Colombo: Lebanon government has offered an amnesty for the Sri Lankan migrant workers overstaying in the country violating visa regulations. During the amnesty period, the migrant workers can surrender and return to the homeland without facing punitive actions.

It is believed that around 2,000 Sri Lankan migrant workers are illegally staying in Lebanon. Some of them are accused of fleeing from the place of work violating their service agreements.

The amnesty was offered by the Lebanon government following a discussion the Sri Lankan Ambassador in Lebanon had with the Lebanon Home Minister.

A special office has been set up in the Sri Lanka Embassy in Lebanon to prepare documents for the Sri Lankans returning under the amnesty at their expense.

ATCL
 Sporting Club

One more Lebanese beach story

The following is a text published by Khouloud Na. on the wall of the Facebook Group Support Rights of Migrant Domestic Workers in Lebanon yesterday. I'm reproducing it as is.
I was trying to comment this on the video on ethiopian suicide blog but i couldn't cause i don't have an account:
Once we were in Saint George beach club and there was a family sitting near us with their teen-age handicapped brother. They came to lebanon to spend the summer vacation. An African nurse accompanied him from their home residence abroad to here cause he needs 24/24 hour assistance. Soon as he wanted to swim she went with him in the water to help him out. She's the only one who knows how to hold him and to make him swim.

But before her neck reached the surface of the water, the life guard blew his whistle hard. I thought someone is drowning but i was shocked to see him telling her that she can't get into the pool. The guy's young sister went to him and asked him why is that, but he said she's not allowed to get in the pool. She then went to the main office to ask ... See Moreabout that, she thought it's because she was wearing shorts and a t-shirt rather than swimming suits, but they told her it's because her colour is black and the Lebanese people "would get disgusted". She couldn't swim, neither he could. They stayed under the hot sun... (pools pools everywhere and not one to drop in!) This mentallity is the handicapped mentallity of the lebanese society and we do need assistance!

Caught on Video: Swimming pool denies entry to migrant domestic worker

The Anti Racism Movement organized a direct action this weekend to highlight racism in Lebanese society towards migrant domestic workers and people of color in general.

Below is the video of Anti Racism Movement activists trying to get a migrant domestic worker into the swimming pool. The activists are allowed in, but not the "maid".

For previous entries related to this issue, check this and this.

The press release:

NEWS
“Anti Racism Movement” launches in Lebanon

July 12, 2010- A group of independent activists organized a direct action on a number of touristic resorts that adopt racist policies towards migrant workers in Lebanon on the basis of color, race, and class. Some of these resorts had put up signs asking its customers not to bring radio, food and maids to the resort.

After conducting several field researches and verifying the rules and procedures of the resorts, activists went to the resorts identified as the most racist accompanied by an activist of the Madagascari citizenship. The woman was denied entry by the administration of the resort and no valid reasons were provided.

"We have monitored more than 15 resorts that follow the same traditions and practices of racism against non-whites in Lebanon, reminiscent of the era of apartheid in South Africa, blatant racism in the United States," said the campaign's spokesperson at IndyACT, Aimee Razanjay. "The action today is the beginning of a series similar actions to monitor and document such practices and to inform the Lebanese society of the extent of their contribution to perpetuating the racist system in Lebanon," added Aimee.

Incidents of this sort have recently been exacerbated where customers are prevented from entering because of skin color or prejudice and definitely because of the weakness and/or indifference of civil society actors in dealing with these phenomena and the absence of a criminalizing and binding law that affects these racist practices in Lebanon.

"The Lebanese government should take the initiative to fine those resorts that are engaged with such policies going against the UN Charter of human rights, in particular the item relating to equality," said Ali Fakhry, Communication Officer of the Anti Racism Movement in IndyACT. "This move is an explicit notification to the rest of the resorts that there are activists not willing to stay silent anymore, "said Fakhry.

The Anti Racism Movement is preparing for several events and actions advertised in a timely manner designed to support, advocate and empower migrant domestic workers in Lebanon.

Lebanon supports the new convention to protect domestic workers

According to an email brief I received from Christian Aid, Lebanon has supported the new convention to protect domestic workers at the recent annual International Labour Conference, where ILO members agreed on a new Convention which will outline rights and protections for domestic workers.

For more information:

Christian Aid: New convention to protect abused workers

Moves Welcomed to Protect Rights of Exploited Domestic Workers

According to Christian Aid, the next steps for this area of work include working with partners to:
  • ensure that the detail of the ILO Convention reflects the needs of domestic workers as far as possible;
  • build wider and deeper support for the ILO Convention, particularly in the Middle East;
  • hold governments accountable for acting on positive positions taken in the ILO process by improving national laws and practice to match these benchmarks;
  • build support for the Convention and its ratification by countries in the Middle East;
  • deepen the participation and organisation of domestic workers’ groups in the ILO process, other international fora, and in national contexts;
  • highlight the value of domestic work and the poor conditions of many domestic workers in the Middle East;
  • support our UK partners in calling for the UK government to support a substantive Convention to further the rights of domestic workers internationally.

Wear your “Yes Madam” t-shirt today!

As part of their anti-racism movement campaign, IndyACT has produced a line of t-shirts entitled “End Modern Day Slavery” with front images and text including:
  • Migrant Domestic Workers are dying at a rate of ONE per week
  • “Yes Madame” employment agency. Sri Lankan, Ethiopian, Nepalese, Filipina.
  • My Sri Lankan is Ethiopian, your Sri Lankan is from where?
The “Yes Madame” employment agency is a REAL agency located at Hamra. The “My Sri Lankan is…” is a pejorative expression often repeated by some Lebanese whereby they refer to any migrant worker as an automatic “Sri Lankan”, regardless of nationality. The word is used as a noun depicting “maids” instead of an adjective depicting nationality.

T-shirts available in 3 sizes, and cost 10 USD as a contribution to IndyACT’s campaign in support of migrant domestic workers. To order the t-shirts, email Comms at indyact dot org
IndyACT offices located in Gemayzeh, Beirut.

Reasons and circumstances of death are unknown. Al-Akhbar does not use the word "suicide".

Asharq Al Awsat: "Lebanon: Nobody's There…Don't Call"

Lebanon: Nobody's There…Don't Call, 28/06/2010,

Lebanon is indeed a country of wonders! However complains of migrant workers being mistreated is not something limited to the Lebanese, but also Ethiopians, other African countries, Sri Lankans, Egyptians, and Syrians, have also faced similar accusations. So of course the Lebanese are not the only ones who have contrived to treat others badly, this is a defect that different Middle Eastern countries share, and is something that reflects an imbalance between regimes and laws that need to be activated and applied on the ground. However the Lebanese case remains interesting due to the fragility and vulnerability of Lebanese society. I do not know the future of the Lebanese service and tourist industries (which the Lebanese are extremely proud of today) if the third world migrant workers abandon it! These workers are employed in offices, kitchens, gas stations, storehouses, warehouses, garages, and other fields that the Lebanese no longer consent to work in. This is something that would result in these industries declining, or perhaps even being destroyed
The Sudanese workers crisis, and the Lebanese government's mishandling of this, is unacceptable for a country that has always boasted of its liberties and civil rights. I wonder if these migrant workers would have received the same treatment if they were from France, Canada, or Italy? Therefore, this is my advice to the Sudanese brothers; change your nationality in Lebanon to Ukrainian, and you will see the difference.
