Unfortunately, stories like this contribute to Lebanese stereotyping of the migrant domestic workers as 'uncivilized' and 'criminals'. Al-Akhbar newspaper reported today that a maid was caught at the airport before leaving Lebanon with 202 golden pieces and 9 money transfer receipts (transferred to her country, but did not specify which country). She had robbed her employers in Verdun, according to the news piece.

أوقفت العاملة الأجنبية زوريا ع. في مطار بيروت أمس وفي حوزتها 202 ليرة ذهبية و9 إيصالات بتحويل أموال إلى بلدها. وبالاستماع إلى إفادتها اعترفت زوريا بأنها أقدمت على سرقة المجوهرات من منزل مشغّليها في فردان.
